To increase better information, the most right thing is to pick a suitable school. Guardians battle with it since it is generally hard to pick a fitting school for their kids. They consider picking either non-public school or state funded school. There are numerous contrasts among open and tuition based schools. The motivation behind this paper is to separate educators, contemplating conditions and educational cost of private and state funded schools. The principal distinction among private and state funded school is educators. Instructors of non-public school are preferred taught over educators of state funded schools. Since tuition based school managers attempt to employ accomplished educators who have a bachelorââ¬â¢s certificate as well as have an advanced education. The nature of instruction is the most significant one. Also, non-public school educators must have well relational abilities and capacity to instruct well. Conversely, government funded schools donââ¬â¢t care quite a bit of their instructors. Any instructor who has a bachelorââ¬â¢s qualification can educate in government funded school. The second distinction among private and state funded school is considering conditions. Contemplating condition in non-public school is less loud than that in government funded school. Since, non-public school have less number of understudies and educators when contrasted with the state funded schools. Moreover, considering rooms are more agreeable than that in government funded schools. Additionally, examining rooms in government funded schools are known to be more terrible than in tuition based schools with structures, libraries and furniture. Numerous renowned non-public schools give new books to their understudies which make understudies bound to consider. Actually, most books which are given from state funded schools are old. Therefore, understudies inspiration to contemplate diminishes. The third contrast among private and government funded school is educational cost. Most non-public schools charge educational costs. A large portion of the tuition based schools hold an occasion for guardians. These exercises are devoted for guardians to have stable correspondence among instructors and guardians. Taking everything into account, guardians pick tuition based schools since it is superior to government funded schools. I moved on from tuition based school in any case, I had examined government funded school as well. Along these lines, I know the distinctions and recognizable pieces of proof of private and state funded schools. The motivation behind why I pick non-public school is, I concentrated preferred in tuition based school over in government funded school. There were numerous favorable circumstances that I found in a tuition based school which were the contemplating condition was better in non-public school and educators were profoundly qualified than that in government funded school. It is greatly improved to pick tuition based school since non-public school can instruct understudy superior to government funded school. Notwithstanding, non-public school charges educational cost while it can give understudies significantly more instruction than government funded school. The more you pay, the more you take. Rather than following the standard novel structure, Hemingway joined many short stories into a book. A few short stories included were at that point distributed in different writing mediums, and very fruitful. Fourteen stories created Men Without Women, and ten sonnets with three stories framed Winners Take Nothing. Hemingway expected to utilize these books to build up his place and character in American history, the one of a super-male author. Charles Scriber's Sons distributed 20,300 duplicates of Winners Take Nothing on October 27, 1933. (Oliver 355). They sold for two dollars each. (Oliver 355). This book met open shock, as individuals got irritated by Hemingway's selection of subjects. Hemingway secured points, for example, homosexuality, madness, self destruction, skepticism, and veneral malady (Wagner-Martin 32). To comprehend the open's negative points of view, perspectives and feelings on Winner Take Nothing, we should look at the verifiable setting of Hemingway's time. America was in middle of the Great Depression. Numerous individuals were in direst circumstances, and scarcely sticking onto trust in better fortunes. Normally, they needed wellsprings of expectation, and Hemingway's book unquestionably doesn't offer expectation or a feeling of leave (Wagner-Martin 33). Also, Hemingway in Winners Take Nothing intensely handles fragile good issues that America respected delicately during that timespan. As Michael Rey nolds capably puts it, Winner Take Nothing was grating to the overarching American good perspective on itself. (Wagner-Martin 32). Since Hemingway neglected to compose a boo... ...is life. (Pearsall 115). Strangely, Hemingway viewed negative audits as an ambush on his notoriety, and as a ploy planned to demolish his profession as an essayist. Be that as it may, the negative audits did nothing to impede Hemingway's place in history as an incredible essayist. Hemingway despite everything has an enormous following in present day society in spite of being dead for more than forty years. His imaginative capacity with writing has individuals shouting about Hemingway as one of the best composition beauticians ever. Champs Take Nothing and Men Without Women assumed an enormous job in that notoriety. Reference index Oliver, Charles M. Ernest Hemingway a to z. New York: Checkmark Books, 1999. If wishes were horses wed all ride. However, on your birthday, you are entitled to make a wish. It is believed that if you make a silent wish as you blow the candles on your birthday cake, your wish will come true. The History of Birthday Wishes The tradition of putting candles on a birthday cake dates back to early Greek civilization. In ancient times, the Greek lit candles on the cake offered to the Moon Goddess, Artemis. They believed that the smoke emanating from the blown candles carried the prayers to heaven, and these prayers were answered. It was also believed that blowing out candles in one breath brought good luck. The tradition of blowing candles continues even today. The Meaning of Birthday Celebrations But birthday celebrations have become far too elaborate and laborious. Today, it is no longer just about cakes and candles; it is also about exotic party venues, theme birthdays, and expensive goody bags. Let us not forget the significance of birthday celebrations. The presence of your loved ones on your birthday makes you feel cherished. You cannot measure their love with the budget of the birthday party. Even a simple birthday celebration or a heartfelt birthday wish should make you feel blessed. Whether it is your 18th or 60th birthday; whether you have a simple or an elaborate celebration, you are lucky to share this special occasion with your near and dear ones. Equality of Educational Opportunities in the United States Education has an immense impact on the human society. The quality of human resource of a nation is easily judged by the number of literate population living in it. On the hand, wealthy school districts have smaller class sizes, experienced and high quality teachers, and the scientific and technical tools needed for learning and education. Therefore, low-income students not only struggle with poverty related issues at home but generally receive an inferior education at school as well. This would leads the students to a sense of hopelessness and to achieve below their potential and eventually drop from school, which would reduce their opportunities for good employment or to secure housing in an area where better schools could serve their own children in the future. On the other hand, inequality of education is obvious within school districts, rich or poor, because school boards, dominated by the local ruling class, control both the content and quality of public education through policy setting and resource allocation. School trustees decide what is appropriate and adequate education for different social groups and classes. This concept eventually gained the label of "race" in 1789, a "zoological term... generally defined as a subcategory of a species which inherits certain physical characteristics that distinguish it from other categories of that same species." (Tivnan 181). Although slavery has been by and large eliminated in virtually every part of the modern world, the concept used to rationalize its implementation, "racism", still plagues most modern cultures. Races that were once enslaved, or are minorities within their society, are often discriminated against in a variety of ways. This attitude can result in actions as severe as the Holocaust of World War II, or as minor as a dismissive glance from a salesman at an uptown department store. In America, an active war has been waged on discrimination since minorities and women rallied for equal rights in the Civil Rights movement of the 1960's. In the last 35 years, the American government has made strides toward ending discrimination altogether, enacting social policies designed to give the downtrodden minorities a leg-up in a white-dominated society. One such policy, Affirmative Action, generally refers to programs that give preferential treatment to minority groups based on socioeconomic status and which try to correct past injustices inflicted upon said groups. This use of racial criteria to award opportunities in fields like education and employment has sparked major debates over reverse discrimination and moral obligation in today's America. Many claim that blacks in America have a "moral claim" to compensate them for the "paramount injustice" inflicted upon them, slavery (Tivnan 202). Many people believe that Eminem is brain washing todays youth with his lyrics, but is he? Or is Eminem just another character being portrayed by Marshall Mathers III. Is Marshall any different than some of the movie stars that go on screen and change from a normal human being to a killer? Many people are trying to prove that he is different; they want Eminem out of the music industry and out of show business altogether. But things dont exactly seem to be going their way. Marshall just keeps selling more and more records, and in November 2002 he made his big screen debut in the hit movie 8-Mile. Many people are also asking, is Marshall Mathers really the bad boy the he plays in his music and movies? Although Marshall has faced gun and assault charges, many believe that he is nowhere near the violent, hateful, homophobic person that he plays. Some actually view Marshall as a l oving, caring father who is nowhere near the character that he plays in his music. By examining both sides of this controversy, we can see whether Eminems lyrics are a detriment to society or harmless entertainment. As there are many people that totally despise of Eminem a group called GLAAD (Gays and Lesbians Against Defamation) is among Eminems critics. Gays and lesbians who say he is a homophobe very often protest against Eminem. But the openly gay pop star Elton John thinks differently. I like some of the Eminem stuff because its kind of clever. I like the rhythm, I like the attitude, and I can imagine if I was a young kid now, Id like that(CNN June 14, 2001). Elton John also did a duet with Eminem during the Grammy awards in February of 2001. During the duet the two sang a song written by Marshall about a crazed Eminem fan that kills himself and his wife who is pregnant with his child. Aft... Also, we see that distribution of power is yet unbalanced within the same state. The distribution of power from a state to its localities is not immutable, nor is it unidirectional. Some states are kind enough to give more authority to their cities while others like to keep power in their own hands. John F. Dillon set out his rule stating that local governments can only exercise powers given to them by the state. This rule is dominant in the working of many cities in the world today. In addition, we see that many states that adopted Dillons rule have home rule provisions that they follow. This allows them to have more autonomy from the state and make important decisions they need to make for the development of their cities. Statistics show that cities have lost discretionary powers in the last decade. The city managers feel this loss more than other stake holders because it makes their work hard. One way that has been adapted by cities is to act as coherent force against states rather than being divided among themselves. Some states legislators show loss of trust in the local governments being the reason for them to not let them enjoy the freedom. Annexation is a method used to improve the overall fiscal environment of a municipality. Looking at the effects of annexation we see that it has influenced spending but effects of spending are complicated depending on the changes in municipality density levels. Annexation has been an important method of physical municipal growth. In the U.S, this is a very intense local issue. Due to this, there are a lot of conflicts that arise because it can increase a cityââ¬â¢s population, tax base, demographics, population of voters etc. In addition, annexation can lead to removal of an existing tax or Haisley Fortehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18253417646784910295noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5244839023526302101.post-54549677020214881112020-02-05T15:47:00.001-08:002020-02-05T15:47:02.431-08:00Japan's Miracle Economy Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words - 1Japan's Miracle Economy - Research Paper Example This paper will discuss the contributing factors to the economic recovery in Japan after the WWII. The paper will look into the details of each contributing factor to shed the light on the cause of the fast and remarkable recovery in the nationââ¬â¢s destroyed economy after the war. While Japanââ¬â¢s miracle economy can be attributed to many factors, the American contribution was the greatest factor to the fast economic recovery. America played a great role in the recovery of Japanââ¬â¢s post war economy. The US was in a position to help in the recovery of Japanââ¬â¢s economy since they did not suffer huge post war economic damages. One of the greatest contributions of the American government to the economic miracle was opening up trade channels between the two nations. After the war, Japan had suffered great inflation and the unemployment rate in the nation was at an all time high. America signed business treaties with Japan for its exports to the US and the return imports. The trade process was in favor of Japan and it led to a fast growth in the GDP. The US government imposed restriction policies on Japanââ¬â¢s imports hence providing big loans to the Japanese government. The US also sent economic experts to campaign for personal savings and capital investment in Japan which subsequently increased the rate of local and foreign investment in the nation. The American government piloted a recovery p rogram for Japan which boosted the implementation of the new economic policies that the Japanese government had put in place after the war1. The US offered top-level support for Japanese postwar democratization was through protecting Japan by the Seventh Fleet and support of the Japanese export drive. Insulation is one of the commonly used tool and also used as an effective techniques for heat loss prevention. This paper studies the different insulation materials and their comfort ability in preventing heat loss and their payback time period. The paper is analytical in nature and evaluates empirically as to how to measure the heat loss or gain and payback time of different insulation materials for cavity walls and what are the steps that can be taken prevent or control heat loss. Introduction Today, the world is concerned with factors like pollution, energy conservation, CO2 emissions and climate change. Each and every section of human and technical advancement is offset by some form of pollution that can have long term effects on the environment and consequently sustainability of life on Planet Earth. Automobiles, industries, and agriculture are some of the more popular areas of concern. But few are aware of the fact that the construction industry in general and private dwellings in particular plays a much larger role in polluting the environment. This observation can be verified from the figures and statistics as follows. The top twenty polluting countries in terms of CO2 emissions are given below. http://www.ucsusa.org/global_warming/science_and_impacts/science/graph-showing-each-countrys.html It can be seen that the United Kingdom is the eighth most polluting country in the world. But it is far lower in terms of volume when compared to the United States, Japan, and the fast growing economies like India, China, and Russia. The UK also comes in eighth place in terms of per/capita emissions (9.66 tonnes per person). Taking these figures into consideration, the country can be classified as a moderately polluting one. For example, Australias place in terms of total CO2 emissions is sixteen, but its per/capita emission figures stand at 20.58. The United States come second with 19.78. The top polluter, China has only per/capita emissions of 4.58. http://www.ucsusa.org/global_warming/science_and_impacts/science/graph-showing-each-countrys.html While the size of the population is a factor in bringing down per/capita emission figures, the case of Australia and the United States reveal that even countries with lower population levels can be responsible for high levels of emissions. It appears that the construction industry do contribute significantly to emissions. It is estimated that the construction industry in general contribute approximately thirty three percent of total green house gas emissions. (Page 3) http://www.ciob.org.uk/filegrab/TheGreenPerspective.pdf?ref=539 According to another observation, the situation is more serious in case of private dwellings. Most peoples concern about carbon emissions or a carbon footprint centres around gas-guzzling cars or flights. But in reality much of the problem is closer to home, or indeed in the home. Lighting and heating buildings generates 50% of Britains carbon dioxide emissions while the production of building materials accounts for a further 10% http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2007/feb/28/communities.society In this context, the current study is significant because it is concerned with heat loss effectiveness and the economic (payback period) benefits that home owners derive from having efficient insulati on. In this context, it is important that the construction industry provides technology in the form of insulation that can conserve energy (in terms of heat loss). This paper reviews the benefits of using insulation material in conserving heat loss and also the long term economic benefits that accrue from using such materials. The paper will focus on dwelling construction and not on large scale industrial, office, or housing projects. It is hoped that this study will provide a foundation for further studies in any form of construction with regard to use of insulation materials for energy and heat conservation. Heat loss and payback time is for cavity wall insulation materials(EPS, rockwool, phenolic foam, cork, sheeps wool, polyurethane foam, cellular glass, cellulose)in a semi detached dwelling of 8400 x 5500 mm outer dimension over period of time like from (2001-2010)and for future weather predictions as well like (2020,2030,2040,2050)in various counties of England. It will also take i nto consideration factors like temperature variations across seasons and geographical locations in the United Kingdom. The designing process has a lot to do in controlling heat loss. However, majority of the structures do not have enough system for preventing the loss. Though there are various techniques available in the market to reduce the heat loss, majority of them are not used due to different reasons such as non-reliability. One of the commonly used heat loss prevention technique is insulation. The State and its people are motivated in heat loss savings not only because they can save money, but they can protect the unnecessary loss of resources and energy as well. If proper heat loss prevention technique is applied there can have a great amount of savings. And if the technique used is insulation technique, then the chance o f savings would be high as there are lots of advantages to insulation technique compared to other techniques (Egan, 1975). Before going deep into the concepts of heat loss and insulation technique of prevention of heat loss it is better to have an understanding of the term heat. The term heat can be defined as the interaction between two substances which occurs by virtue of their temperature difference when they communicate (Moss, 1998, p. 2). It is the nature of the heat it is not constant at any place, but it will move from one place to another. However this movement depends on the temperature of that place. The heat can be lost in different ways such as conduction, infiltrationà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦.etc (Parker, 1997). There are different mechanisms to calculate the quantity of heat loss and these techniques also helps in designing such walls which has less quantity of heat loss. The different insulation material used in the walls can cause difference in the quantity of heat loss. This paper conducts a study of heat loss and payback time of different insulation materials for cavity walls. The different techniques are evaluated on the basis of payback time of the technique used. The payback time refers to the return on the investment of the techniques for preventing heat loss. Here the return in the sense both comfort and saving of money are considered. Research Background The heat loss is serious loss as it causes so many problems including financial problems. Though there are different preventive techniques are available for controlling the heat loss, most of them are not able to give expected result. One among such techniques is insulation technique. There are so many drawbacks for insulation techniques also. Therefore there is a relevance and great amount of significance to conduct a research on the topic heat loss and insulation techniques of preventing heat loss. The wrong selection of insulation materials is one of the main reasons for high amount of heat loss. When heat loss is measured it can be seen that the heat lost when one material of insulation is different from quantity of heat lost when another material of insulation is used. Un-insulated walls can also cause serious problems in terms of energy lost and other problems. The purpose of the building or the wall is also has a significant role in selecting the insulation technique. The moisture problem is one of the main factors to be considered. If the moisture problem is high, then insulation cannot do much do in preventing heat loss. The insulation materials should be selected in such a way that, it can ensure a control in moisture and air. Selecting the incorrect kind of insulation technique can increase the moisture problems. The insulation process would be easy and highly efficient, if the flow of air and moisture is properly controlled. The insulation process in such form is highly expensive and therefore it must be done with at most care. The reason is that, if there is no enough return on such insulation, the effort and money would be waste. Therefore each kind of insulation technique should be deeply analyzed in terms of its efficient application and then the selection decision should be made. Research Aim and Objectives This paper will address the topic of heat loss and payback period of different insulation materials. The main intention behind the research is to evaluate how effectively the heat loss can be avoided and how payback period of different insulation material can be calculated using analytical methods. The research is conducted in the context of commercial building where huge investments are made to avoid huge loss. But most of the cases are futile in the sense that either they lack proper insulation material or identifying major causes of heat loss in domestic and commercial environments. This study will explain how to insulate a building and how much insulation is needed including how to measure or calculate heat loss in a building. The specific objectives can be briefed as below: To investigate into how to Measure or Calculate Stop Building Heat Loss To assess and evaluate the various methods of how to measure or calculate heat loss (or gain) in a building To Identifying different building design temperatures how to use a home energy audit or heat loss analysis To assess the payback period of different insulation materials and how they can be perfectly calculated A Literature Review Heat loss is an important concern when considering the huge impact it has on saving energy which is the need of the time. Maintaining a proper temperature in a building consumes a large portion of energy worldwide. A building which is properly sealed, moisture-protected and insulated walls help increase comfort, reduce noise, and save on energy costs. However, there are different insulation materials out there which differs in there qualities especially in the R value which is a measure of thermal resistance of a material, the higher the R value the lower the heat loss. This topic covers information on different insulation materials, their payback periods, influence of weather on them, different climatic conditions in UK and its impact on building insulation materials. Heat loss of insulation materials Insulation slows the rate at which heat is lost to the outdoors. Heat flows in three ways: by conduction, convection and radiation. The main function of insulation is to keep the heat in. To be effective, insulation must be resistant to heat flow, able to fill a space completely and evenly without compacting and durable. How heat loss of insulation materials happens? Exposure to moisture Joints and cracks in the insulation allow water to travel in the insulation Corrosion Insulation that are not rated for the highest temperature of the material being covered Long-term exposure to heat reduces the strength of the insulation material. Insulation that do not should fit snugly all over the wall Using tape to cover gaps or hold insulation How is Heat Lost Heat can be absent in a array of ways. Some of these are calefaction accident by infiltration, losses by advice through floors, ceilings, individual bottle windows, double bottle or artificial covered windows, doors, and calefaction losses by conduction through walls. There are mainly three such a method in which calefaction moves (Murphy, 1976). These are convection, advice and radiation. This accident by agency of conduction can be anticipation of as the alteration of calefaction activity through or aural a solid. This alteration amount varies from actual to material. Heat can also be transferred through a fluid. This is alleged convection. Infiltration heat loss, on the added hand, can be anticipation of in the afterward way (Croy, 1984). Heat is transferred by conduction, convection or radiation, or by a combination of all three. Heat always moves from warmer to colder areas; it seeks a balance. If the interior of an insulated fish hold is colder than the outside air, the fish hold draws heat from the outside. The greater the temperature difference, the faster the heat flows to the colder area. Conduction. By this mode, heat energy is passed through a solid, liquid or gas from molecule to molecule in a material. In order for the heat to be conducted, there should be physical contact between particles and some temperature difference. Therefore, thermal conductivity is the measure of the speed of heat flow passed from particle to particle. The rate of heat flow through a specific material will be influenced by the difference of temperature and by its thermal conductivity. Convection: By this mode, heat is transferred when a heated air/gas or liquid moves from one place to another, carrying its heat with it. The rate of heat flow will depend on the temperature of the moving gas or liquid and on its rate of flow. Radiation: Heat energy is transmitted in the form of light, as infrared radiation or another form of electromagnetic waves. This energy emanates from a hot body and can travel freely only through completely transparent media. The atmosphere, glass and translucent materials pass a significant amount of radiant heat, which can be absorbed when it falls on a surface (e.g. the ships deck surface on a sunny day absorbs radiant heat and becomes hot). It is a well known fact that light-coloured or shiny surfaces reflect more radiant heat than black or dark surfaces, therefore the former will be heated more slowly. A chance for any of the above transfer of heat ends up in heat loss. The Moisture Problem The attendance of damp in the exoteric walls of a architecture reduces the effectiveness of insulation and may in actuality adulterate the framing and structural materials as able-bodied as accord to cruddy stains and affect the buildings appearance. Vapor manual through a actual is agnate to that for calefaction advice through a apparent which was declared earlier. It is dependent on time, apparent area, breath pressures on both abandon of the surface, thickness, and permeability, which is a measurement of a materials ability to address moisture. One blazon of botheration is if abstract forms on walls, floors or beam sections of a building. Here the insulation amount (R) is bargain because air pockets in the insulation actual are now abounding with water. It is this baptize that creates the problem. That is because baptize is a good aqueduct or poor insulator (Argue, 1980) Moisture problems occur when indoor air comes into contact with single window panes or uninsulated walls. Symptoms of moisture indoors Odours, frost and ice on cold surfaces, damp feeling , surface discoloration, staining, texture changes, deformed wood surfaces, wood decay, sweating pipes, water leaks, and dripping, peeling, blistering and cracking paint, crusty, powdery, chipping paint and masonry, and high indoor humidity. Outdoor sources of moisture. Foundation drainage slabs, below grade walls, splash back, Construction details, blocked exterior air circulation are few main sources of the moisture outdoors. Indoor sources of moisture. Occupants, firewood stored, attic, crawl spaces, construction materials, inadequate use of exhaust fans, aquariums and house plants, humidifiers, air conditioners and plumbing leaks. Identification and Prevention of Heat Loss One way in which to appraise a structures accessible calefaction accident is to employ energy audits. Audits are classified into three types, blazon A, B, and C (Shurcliff, 1980). These classes are based on the abyss or acuteness of the audit. The residential sector apropos itself with affairs A audits and chic B audits. Program audits are conducted by able auditors while B audits are commonly mail in blazon audits. The attributes of these audits may be on website audits where one identifies locations in which activity is captivated or lost. There are a variety of methods acclimated in free these locations of calefaction loss. One such method is the use of bittersweet techniques. A key agency in the blockage of calefaction accident is the use of able insulation materials accompanied by actual accession techniques. Thermal insulation is any material, or aggregate of materials, which provides attrition to the flow of calefaction energy (Strother, 1990). Insulation can appear in a array of shapes and material make-ups. It may appear as sheets, rolls, or blankets. It may also be of a part blazon that is caked or destroyed in. The part blazon is usually made up of bottle fiber, bedrock absolute or artificial area the cycle or absolute blazon may be made of bottle cilia or bedrock wool. These abstracts alter in their advantages and disadvantages. 1. Provide adequate insulation levels. Reducing the energy use of a building is usually the single most important thing you can do to reduce the buildings overall environmental impact. Dont substitute a green insulation material for a nongreen material if the change will hurt energy performance. 2. With lower R-value materials, increase insulation thickness. If substituting a green insulation material for a higher-R-value but more environmentally damaging insulation material, design the building to permit greater insulation thickness so that there is no sacrifice in energy performance. 3. Try to avoid HCFC-foamed insulation materials. HCFCs are far less destructive to stratospheric ozone than CFCs, but damaging nonetheless. When it can be done without reducing overall energy performance, avoid all HCFC based insulation, including extruded polystyrene, polyisocyanurate, and spray polyurethane. Expanded polystyrene or rigid fiberglass can be substituted for extruded polystyrene and polyisocyanurate. HFC-blown polyurethane (SuperGreen Foam), CO 2-blown isocyanurate (Icynene), or CO 2-blown polyurethane (Resin Technologies when it becomes available) can be substituted for conventional HCFC-blown polyurethane. 4. With highly conductive framing systems, avoid thermal bridging by installing a layer of insulating sheathing. With steel framing, for example, it does not make sense to design the walls to accommodate thicker or higher-R-value cavity-fill insulation when the steel will dramatically reduce the average wall R-values; instead, minimize the cavity-fill insulation and spend your budget putting insulative sheathing over the framing. 5. Choose high-recycled-content insulation materials. With cavity-fill insulation, cellulose and mineral wool have higher recycled content than fiberglass. Among the different fiberglass products, Schuller Internationals products have the highest post-consumer recycled content. Among extruded polystyrene products, Amofoam is the only one available with recycled content. 6. With built-up roofing systems, install a layer of sheathing between the insulation and the roofing surface so that reroofing is possible without destroying the insulation. 7. When substituting fiber insulation materials for boardstock insulation, consider the impact of using more framing material. Boardstock insulation is selfsupporting, while cavity-fill fiber insulation materials require a framed cavity. Even though the fiber insulation material might be environmentally superior, when you factor in the additional framing resource required, the advantages may not be as great. 8. With most fiber insulation materials, you should install a continuous air barrier between the insulation and the living space to keep fibers out of the indoor air. 9. For chemically sensitive individuals, specify a non-offgassing insulation material, such as the new Miraflex fiberglass from Owens Corning, or Air Krete. As additional testing information becomes available, consider Icynene and Greenwood Cotton insulation for these applications. 10. Choose an insulation contractor who recycles scrap insulation. Batt insulation scraps and Icynene trimmings can be chopped into loose-fill insulation. Insulation can be defined as the act of protecting something by surrounding it with material that reduces or prevents the transmission of sound or heat or electricity There are mainly two types of insulation materials. They are organic materials and inorganic materials. The different organic materials of insulation are polystyrene, polyurethane, phenolic foam, polyethylene foam etc. Different types of inorganic materials are mineral wool, calcium silicate, cellular glass, micro porous silica, magnesia, ceramic fibre, vermiculite and perlite. As the main purpose of insulation is control the heat loss, the insulation materials used must be able to prevent heat loss. Commonly used insulation materials are explained below Calcium silicate This form of insulation material is generally used in surfaces and also in piping. They will not easily get in contact with fire. This material makes use of organic and nonorganic fibre materials. The temperature range is 37.8à °C 648.9à ° Glass The following subdivisions are there in this category. Fibrous: This material has a very good capacity to absorb sound. The temperature covered is -40.0à °C to 37.8à °C. This is also a commonly used insulation material. Cellular This material can be transferred into different shapes. The temperature covered is -267.8à °C to 482.2à °C. The qualities of this material are it can resist number of chemical and it is not combustible. Mineral fiber This material is having high limit with regard to the upper temperature. The higher temperature is 1037.8à °C. This material has a very good capacity to absorb sound . Perlite This material has low contraction and the material last for a long period. The material rough one and shape is designed beforehand. Other materials used are elastomeric, foamed plastic, insulating cementà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦etc. Estimated Embodied Energy of Several Insulation Materials It surprises a lot of people to learn that a state-of-the-art, energy-efficient, passive-solar house built today may consume less heating and cooling energy over 30 or even 50 years of operation than was required to build it. This means that if our society wants to continue the impressive gains that have been made over the past 20 years in reducing energy use, we will need to focus attention on embodied energy as well as operating energy. Embodied energy is the energy required to produce and transport materials. If two insulation materials insulate equally well and other manufacturing impacts are comparable, the one with lower embodied energy is environmentally preferable. While the embodied energy of insulation materials is usually quite low compared with the energy a given amount of insulation will save over its lifetime, it is nonetheless important. Embodied energy values for common insulation materials are compared in Table 3. Because these values were obtained from different sou rces and may have been obtained using different assumptions, they should not be considered highly accurate. They do provide useful order-of-magnitude comparisons, though. Just how embodied energy values relate to environmental performance of a product is complicated by the fact that different fuels have different environmental impacts. For this broad comparison, it is reasonable to assume that a Btu of energy used by one industry is roughly comparable in terms of resource use and resultant pollution to a Btu used by another industry. Reusability and Recyclability Most insulation material reaches the end of its life not because it has worn out or has ceased to function properly, but because the building it was installed in is altered or taken down. The most obvious exception to this is commercial roofing. Many built-up roofing systems incorporate both rigid insulation and asphaltic roof surfacing. When re-roofing becomes necessary, the whole roof surface is often removed-insulation and all. The reusability of insulation materials is dependent on how those materials were installed. To facilitate re-roofing without replacing the insulation, Mike Tobin of AFM Corporation recommends installing a layer of sheathing between the insulation and the roofing membrane. If rigid boardstock insulation can be removed without breaking it up, it can often be reused. Performance of reused polyisocyanurate insulation will not be as good as that of new material, both because some of the low-conductivity gases will have escaped and because of nail holes. XPS, EPS , and all fiber insulation materials should not appreciably change in their insulating performance, though dust in fiber insulation materials will make working with the stuff at best disagreeable and at worst hazardous. A new product introduced in 1993, the Big Green Machine, is designed to chop up batt insulation to produce a loose-fill product for insulating attics (see EBN Vol. 3, No. 2). While primarily used by insulation contractors to reuse scraps left over from batt insulation jobs, the machine should also work for reprocessing batts recovered from old buildings during remodeling or demolition. The Big Green Machine can also be used to process waste Icynene insulation; large quantities of which are typically generated during installation. Because of dust and dirt, it is unlikely that any fiber insulation materials could be easily recycled into products other than insulation. Of the foam insulation materials, polystyrene (EPS, XPS) is easier to recycle than polyisocyanurate or polyurethane. Polystyrene is a thermoplastic, meaning that it can be melted and reformed into other products with minimal chemical modification. Polyisocyanurate and polyurethane are thermoset plastics that do not melt; most of the research being done on recycling of these materials is focusing on grinding the insulation and using the resultant powder as an additive in various unrelated materials. Another issue of concern relating to disposal of insulation is the CFC blowing agents that are banked in our existing buildings. A large portion of the CFC blowing agents that have been used in building insulation over the past 20 years have not yet been released into the atmosphere; they are still in the insulation. If studies show that even phasing out new production of CFCs and HCFCs is not enough to stem the ozone depletion that is occurring, there might be pressure to capture and thermally destroy CFCs in foam insulation that is being disposed of. This is already happening to a limited extent with refrigerators that are being recycled by utility companies through demand-side management programs. Increasing the payback time The insulation technique is sued for savings. That is economic saving and giving better result. To ensure insulation technique used is efficient and effective, certain points need to be given due consideration. First of the entire place where insulation is to be effected must be measured including finding out the temperature of that place. Then conduct an estimation of the loss in terms of oil and other items, if the insulation is not conducted. After that a detailed study of different factors including the temperature need to be conducted. Next important aspect is to find out the suitable insulation materials based on the analyses and requirements. After this process is done then directly start to talk about the dealers with regard insulation process and cost involved in it. A comparison of in economic terms if insulation is done and if insulation is not done is to be conducted. The payback time can be increased if the proper selection of insulation material is done. While selecting the insulation material following points must be considered. The selected material is economical Friendly with regard to temperature insulation material must have good qualities Life span of insulation material is long Payback period of different insulation materials vary depends on various factors Here is a list of factors for various well known insulation materials. Durability Durability of building materials, including insulation, is a very important environmental consideration. Clearly, more durable materials are environmentally superior to less durable ones. Most insulation materials will perform very well over lifetimes measured in decades or even centuries. There are exceptions, however, and various factors that affect performance over time. The biggest long-term performance concern with cellulose insulation is possible loss of fire-retardant chemicals. Because borates are water soluble, they can leach out if the insulation gets wet. Some people claim that those chemicals gradually disappear even if the material does not get wet, though these claims have not been substantiated. According to Dan Lea of CIMA, there is a shift within the industry toward ammonium sulfate fire retardants, which actually improve in fire retardancy performance over time. A concern with ammonium sulfate, however, is corrosion of metals in contact with the insulation, particularly with wet-spray applications. Other concerns with loose-fill fiber insulation are settling, displacement as a result of wind, and infestations of rodents. It is also possible that, over many decades, dust and dirt accumulation could reduce the R-value-either by compressing the insulation or by filling air pockets. Insulation materials that rely on reflectivity for their thermal performance are prone to reduced performance as accumulating dust reduces the reflectivity. Oak Ridge National Laboratory has published a number of studies on impact of dust on radiant barrier performance. Rigid foam insulation materials that were produced using low-conductivity blowing agents (CFCs and HCFCs) are prone to R-value drift as the blowing agents leak out of the cell structure and air leaks in. Polyisocyanurate foam comes from the factory with an insulating value over R-8 per inch (RSI/m-55), but that may drop as low as R-5.6 (RSI-39), according to some estimates. Depending on the material (especially the facing), the application, and installation practices, a reduction to R-5.6 per inch might take from several years to a century or more. In some parts of the country, foam insulation materials are also prone to infestation of wood-boring insects, such as carpenter ants. Tunnels and nesting cavities will reduce thermal performance and, with foam-core panels, may affect structural performance as well. To address this concern, EPS manufacturers affiliated with AFM Corporation now incorporate a borate additive into EPS foam-core panels. In addition, memories embody unmistakable repercussions on the self. In the book Mind readings an Anthology for Writers by Gary Colombo, there are several essays that reveal how memories evoke individuals to doubt their ideas of selfhood. ââ¬Å"The Inheritance of Toolsâ⬠by Scott Russell Sanders, Sanders writes concerning his fatherââ¬â¢s passing and the strategies that he implements to survive his grief. ââ¬Å"The Brown Waspsâ⬠by Loren Eiseley, Eiseley demonstrates why individuals conjure up memories in their imagination, his only reliable guide of happiness. Individuals hold fast to memories that take a lifetime to fabricate. ââ¬Å"The Self and Society: Changes, Problems, and Opportunitiesâ⬠by Roy F. Baumeister makes use of many labels to justify selfhood. Baumeister examines the history of selfhood. The essays by Sanders, Eiseley, and Baumeister illustrate that situations shape unpredictable sets of memories that promote anxiety, and characterizes the selfhood. Memories and individualââ¬â¢s selfhood connect the past and present bringing about a paradox inspiring individuals to feel sane or manic. Frequently memories are simply figments of the imagination. In addition, in life, individuals have conflicts of his or her ââ¬Å"inner selfâ⬠resulting in a collision of the selfhood. Circumstances activate automatic sets of memories amplifying anxiety that distinguishes the selfhood. Sandersââ¬â¢ while grieving, his fatherââ¬â¢s death, instigates a flood of memories he must handle. Sanders while in the midst of building a wall in his basement hears the news about his father. Sanders recalls hitting his thumb and cursing at the hammer as if it deliberately smashed his thumb. The significance of the hammer and th... ...e, individuals battle their ââ¬Å"inner selfâ⬠. Memories generate a divide in an individualââ¬â¢s selfhood. Furthermore, memories leave strong impressions on the self. Memories cause individuals to experience reservation of their judgment. There are many factors that affect the development at each stage. Family dynamics can have a profound effect on how a child matures and develops as he or she grows older. There are three parenting styles brought forth by Diana Baumrind that influence development in a particular way. These styles are founded on four central dimensions (Berger, 2011, p. 273). Early childhood education has a significant role in cognitive development. The early years in a childââ¬â¢s life can influence the development of certain skills that allow a child build upon what he or she has already developmentally acquired. There are many aspects that influence a childââ¬â¢s development throughout life. Family Dynamics Affecting Early Childhood Development Family dynamics can have a vital role on the development of infants and y oung children. Children born into an abusive household stand a bigger risk of being affected developmentally than those born into a non-abusive family. Abuse can mean emotional or physical and abuse.Children emotionally abused can have a self-image issue where the individual may feel worthless and this can affect the way a child learns. Physical abuse can result in mental defects that can be associated with poor cognitive ability if the abuse were on or about the head of the child. Another way family can affect the development of infants and young children is through language. During infancy children learn by listening and mimicking what they observe. If a parent talks to his or her child or infant the infant is more likely to pick up on words and develop a speech pattern. It is said that most parents the world over are outstanding teachers (Berger, 2011, p. 172). Other theories regarding development of language in children come from the basis that humans are inherently social creatu res and rely on each other for happiness and the ability to survive. Infants are also thought to teach themselves. Bergerà (2011)à stated, ââ¬Å"Noam Chomsky (1968, 1980) and his followers felt that language is too complex to be mastered merely through step-by-step conditioningâ⬠(p. 174).LAD (language acquisition device) allows young children to obtain the guidelines of grammar faster and more successfully from speech heard each day, whether it is in their native language or another language. Parenting Styles Influence on Development Baumrindââ¬â¢s three styles of parenting include authoritarian, permissive and authoritative parenting. Authoritarian parenting means that the parents have the final word and their word is law. This means that the child obeys the parentsââ¬â¢ instructions, requests and commands. Parents who have this type of parenting style might be considered unaffectionate toward the children.Authoritarian parenting teaches a child not to question aut hority and to follow orders. The next parenting style is permissive. Parents who use this style are often referred to as indulgent. This means that they often ââ¬Å"give inâ⬠to their childââ¬â¢s wants and needs. Unlike the authoritarian style that can bring about stern penalties permissive parents use little discipline on their children. Permissive parents are encouraging and tolerant. The third style of parenting is known as authoritative. Authoritative parents have rules and guidelines in place for their children.Parents with this style of parenting are not afraid to enforce the rules and handout punishment that ââ¬Å"fits the crime. â⬠An authoritative parent is usually more willing to forgive a child than punish. This type of parent views him or herself as a parent and not an authority or a friend as in the first two styles of parenting (Berger, 2011). My Choice of Parenting Style The parenting style that I view as most effective is the authoritative parenting st yle. Authoritative parenting seems to be the middle ground between authoritarian and permissive.Whereas authoritative parents are usually ready to forgive, I believe that they are also willing to use discipline when needed. Authoritative parenting styles take a little of authoritarian and permissive and use it to benefit the child. This style that sets limits and also allows the child to have his or her voice heard that in turn lends to maturity. Being flexible and allowing the child to have his or her say can also teach children to respect each other as well as others. Authoritative parenting allows the children to make their own decisions because the rules and guidelines are set.The decision to abide by the rules or break the rules is completely up to the child. The authoritarian parenting style is too strict and structured while the permissive parenting style is too lenient. The middle ground would firmly be authoritative parenting by my views in the subject. Effects of Early Chi ldhood Education on Cognitive Development Early childhood education can have a profound effect on the cognitive development of a child. Early childhood education allows a foundation for children to add to and learn more throughout life.Early childhood education includes skills such as alphabet, numbers, beginning to read and recognize site words. There are many programs around set forth to improve a childââ¬â¢s cognitive development, some even run by our government. Children begin learning as soon as they are born and there are stages where important information can be taught to a child. It is important in early education that the children be stimulated and challenged. In early childhood development young children will go through stages where they will first need to feel secure, experience exploration. This occurs when the child becomes mobile (crawling or walking). Then, the child will want to develop a sense of identity and become more independent. The second stage is considered the preschooler years. This is the time when the child develops better motor skills and balance and also there is an increase in verbal acuity. The final stage occurs when the child hits the primary age group. Reasoning skills, problem-solving skills increase along with written communication develops quickly (Grisham-Brown,à 2003-2009). ConclusionIn summation, family dynamics can affect the development of infants and young children in numerous ways. In many cases, depending on the status of a family can affect how well a child learns or comprehends information. The three parenting styles widely in use today are authoritarian; do not question the parentsââ¬â¢ word. Permissive is where the parent is very indulgent toward the children and lacks any discipline. The third parenting style is authoritative; the parent is flexible but there are rules and guidelines set in place. Early childhood education is imperative to cognitive development.Early childhood education sets the groundw ork for the later years. Early education gives the children the tools so he or she can build upon the knowledge that was acquired early in life. Reference Berger, K. S. (2011). Though this number is high, it is greatly underestimated because disabled people are commonly isolated and stigmatized by their community (ââ¬Å"Disabilitiesâ⬠). After hearing of this extremely high number of disabled people, I then ultimately decided I would write my research paper on ways to help the disabled. Therapeutic riding has been actively helping individuals with disabilities for decades, and can benefit these unfortunate people physically, mentally, and emotionally. ââ¬Å"Therapeutic riding, which originated in Europe, has been actively helping individuals with disabilities since the 1950sâ⬠(Shepard). These skills are carried out through the daily lives of these disabled people. They can practice them at home, at school, and at their workplace. While riding, disabled people can play games such as Red Light/Green Light, which incorporates hand and eye coordination, and verbal commands to control the horses. Just by saying commands like whoa, walk, and trot, these techniques can really help some disabled people with their verbal communication skills (Rogan). I was astonished to find out that disabled people can greatly benefit from their therapeutic riding, even when outside of the arena. The idea of someone being with an animal to improve his or her people skills is intriguing. My research suggests that disabled riders may possibly gain better people skills and sensations by being with a horse, rather than talking with a sophisticated human being. In my research, I found that www.sire-htec.org had a great description of how a disabled person would feel on top of a horse. It stated, the horses ââ¬Å"rhythmic movements help stiff or spastic muscles to relax, much like rocking soothes a crying babyâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Benefitsâ⬠). The famous and well-renowned saying ââ¬Å"do not judge a book by its coverâ⬠is something we have all heard ever since we were little children. In the novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, this advice is crucial. This idiom expresses that someone should not judge something based on its appearance. A book, or in the case of this novel, a person, might actually be very different from the image portrayed on its cover or their outside appearance. This could not be more evident in the novel, The picture of Dorian Gray. In the novel, you can never be sure whats lying beneath the handsome outer surface that is the main character, Dorian Gray. What may look gorgeous on the outside could easily beâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This forms the beginning thoughts in Dorian that appearances are the only thing to matter in the world. During the novel, a painter named Basil Hallward, one of the previously mentioned character Lord Henryââ¬â¢s friend, does a wonderfully done painting of Dorian Gray. Dorian later realizes that he will keep his youthful and beautiful appearance regardless of whatever immoral actions he chooses to indulge in. Dorian Gray then goes on to consider himself free of the moral constraints thus leading to his eventual downfall, related to his inward and outward appearance being strongly opposite. Dorian begins to value his own physical appearance more than the true state of his soul. As the novel goes on, this is openly displayed by the increasing degradation of the portrait painted by Basil. In this way, The Picture of Dorian Gray, should be read as a moralistic tale warning against the dangers of valuing ones appearance too highly, and neglecting ones conscience. This furthers the idea of not judging by the outer appearance of something or someone. As Dorianââ¬â¢s obsession with beaut y grows, it becomes evident that he now seems to have a sort of ââ¬Ëdouble lifeââ¬â¢, ââ¬Å"Certainly no one looking at Dorian Gray that night could have believed that he had passed through a tragedy as horrible as any tragedy of our age. A vastly growing percentage of young people across America are growing more proficient in using the internet for communication across their country to international regions. In the year 2009, a national survey was conducted for individuals between the ages of eight to eighteen years, where the average time adolescents spent on any form of social media was more than 7.5 hours of a day. Once the average time of multitasking was calculated, such as listening to music and web surfing, the overall average time amounted to 10 hours and 45 minutes. The West African Black folk music traits clashed with European light music of the late 18th century and formed: the syncopated rhythms of Ragtime and minor chord voicing characteristic of the Blues. In other words, Jazz was formed mostly from Blues scales. In the early days of Jazz, it was played In small marching bands and solo by some people. When Louis Armstrong tapped Into the Jazz world, he became one of the most Influential players In the Jazz world, especially with his perfection in Improvisation which is still a great part of Jazz: Through his clear, warm sound, unbelievable sense of swing, perfect grasp of harmony, and supremely intelligent and melodic improvisations, he taught us all to play Jazz. After the early 20th Century, Jazz started to evolve with an enormous speed and branched into many categories. One of these categories, Free Jazz, Is still around today emerging all around the world.Free Jazz emerged in the sass, was at its peak in the sass, and it remained a part of Jazz, which is still popular today. Its emergence was mostly by the African- Americans, like all the other Jazz styles. It was a reaction against the interest of white people into Soul Jazz and other music genres which were around in the 1 sass. Many free [palazzo musicians regard [pick]the music as signifying in a broadly religious way, or to have Gnostic[l] or mystical connotations, as an lad to meditation or self- reflection, as evidenced by Chlorates mm album, or Charles GalleysRepent (Bookmarks. Com). Its development was the outcome of many artists such as Ornate Coleman, Eric Adolph, Cecil Taylor, Bill Dixon, and many more. The main feature of Free Jazz is that there are no rules to how you play. In fact the major and the most important part of Free Jazz is improvisation. Musicians do not have to follow any rules, such as chord progression. Instead they play random notes which they desire. They even do not follow any tempos or meters while they are Improvising. However, although we said that there are no rules, the Free Jazz Musicians still follow mom chords and harmonies; they do not play the notes on their instrument randomly (e. G. Playing Low F, then high E, at a very high speed). The reason is obvious: The music would not sound any good if the musicians didnt even use chords or harmonies. Free Jazz musicians often use chromatic intervals and harmonies, and some also use atonality while playing in microphones[2], overtones[3], multiphase[4], and tone clusters[5] (Britannica). Also while performing the piece, It tends to go smooth without any breaks in between, along with the balance of improvisation (which is not going mad while improvising). The earliest records of music using Free Jazz was done by Leonie Tristan, which was a famous pianist at that time. Although he had no real influence on what would Jazz in music. In the late sass, with the arrival of Ornate Coleman in to the music world, the Free Jazz era had truly begun. In fact, his Free Jazz named album was used as the name of the new Jazz era.Afterwards, in the sass, saxophonists John Chlorate, Eric Adolph and pianist Cecil Taylor began composing their own music in the Free Jazz world. In the peak of Free Jazz, it also had another name which was Energy Music which symbolized Free Jazzs improvisation, in which dense sound textures were created from furiously generated note sequences, which means that powerful complicated sounds (with feelings) were created from energetically played notes that come one after another, in certain orders (which is, like I said, what Free Jazz is). In the mid sass, Chlorate and Pharaoh Sanders created new styles by using soaring runs, distorted wails[6] and shrieks[7]. After them, Albert Taylor broke the rules even further in Free Jazz: He played solos with unfixed pitches, multimillion honks, and overtone blasts. The drummers also played a major part in Free Jazz as they also improvised without caring about tempo or meters. Since percussion plays a major part in modern music, it is also heard a lot in most Jazz pieces.Until this date Free Jazz has been an instrumental genre with a very low amount of voices. This was because it was hard to improvise the notes along with the lyrics. Beyond U. S. A, Free Jazz also emerged in Europe and Japan. Peter BRBà ¶taxman, Even Parker, Sonny Bauer, etc. Are the well known Free Jazz musicians of Europe. Europe approached Free Jazz with enjoyment and separated it even further from the other tales of Jazz. Some European and Japanese musicians even came to U. S. A and got immersed into the Free Jazz world.Other than this, some U. S. Free Jazz musicians combined African, India, and Middle Eastern folk music and created a world influenced Free Jazz. As we can see, Free Jazz had been a very distinctive development in the Jazz world and had influenced musicians, not Just in the U. S. But also around the world. In fact, it is so distinctive that it can be easily separated by other types of Jazz. There are also a lot of Free Jazz players around to world who played with their respective instruments and contributed to the Jazz and Free Jazz world. Some characteristics are shared by different disorders. People who rebel against their culture or society or who have outbursts and rages or have trouble with social skills, how they see themselves, how they cope with being around other people, and how they control their impulses are characteristics all shared by those who suffer from personality disorders. Many people who suffer from one disorder usually suffer more than one at a time but does not believe that they have a problem. It is said that, Symptoms stem from basic personality traits that develop over a period of time.(Mental Health) There are a few basic treatments for people with personality disorders that work for some, but not for others. Psychodynamic psychotherapy, or psychoanalytical therapy, focuses on past events and long repressed feelings. Psychodynamic models integrate the past with the patients current life. Behavior therapy is used to teach different kinds of social skills. Cognitive therapy concentrates on changing of negative thinking. Cognitive-behavioral therapy combines cognitive and behavioral therapy techniques. Personality disorders affect ten to fifteen percent of the population. Some affect certain populations more than others. Studies have suggested that biology plays a part in these disorders. Personality disorders can be inherited from generation to generation and are a primary result of the persons experience during childhood and adolescence. Borderline Personality Disorder is the most common personality disorder and affects approximately 2% of the population (Mental Health). Those that suffer from this disorder may experience brief periods in which they separate from reality and often are diagnosed with depression and psychotic disorders. They are unstable in personal relationships and have an unstable self-image and emotions and have little control over impulses. They can be self-destructive, but are rarely violent to other people or animals. Antisocial Personality Disorder is present in 3% men and 1% women and between 70-80% of the prison population (Mental Health). By definition, antisocial personality disorder, or ASP, is a lifelong personality disorder that affects many more men than women and begins before age 15 (Black). It has been studied more than any other personality disorder and can be characterized by a pattern of disregarding and violating others rights and safety. Sufferers can be defiant, irresponsible, deceitful, irritable and aggressive. They may experiment with drugs, alcohol, and sex at a very young age. As a spouse they may be abusive, unfaithful, dishonest and manipulative. Histrionic Personality Disorder is present in 2-3% of the population and more common in women (Mental Health). Sufferers can be characterized by a pattern of seeking attention in strange and unusual ways. They are excessively emotional, overly trusting and gullible, self-absorbed and are concerned with presentation. People with this disorder can function with relatively few problems in society. To be psychosocial implies that personality disorders are a result of experiences the person has had, particularly during childhood or adolescence. Physical, emotional and especially sexual abuse has all been implicated as a cause of personality disorders. Not all abused children develop a disorder and not all people with a disorder have been abused. It just means that abuse leaves a person vulnerable to developing a personality disorder. The language is most commonly used by the deaf population in North America and is the major communication alternative for the deaf and hard of hearing. Since ASL is seen as an authentic and definite language it has many variations just like other languages do such as French and Spanish. There is no single form of sign language that is universal because each variation of sign language is unique to its specific region. ASL is an exceptional form of communication and beneficial to an enormous part of the population. It's origin present conditions future expectations and overall impact are quite extraordinary and eye-opening. Although it is not certain where ASL originated it is true that it came to be more than 200 years ago from the unification of local sign languages and French sign language LSF. The modern day ASL has been influenced by both Al ass at a local sign languages and their marriage has created a deep elaborate and completes language. Although similar to spoken languages sign language also significantly differs from them in a variety of forms. Sunknoll not Damien from Galileo academic search Premier reinforces the fact that "just like spoken languages sign languages are merged with the culture of the deaf communities" ("Spoken Vs sign languages- what's the difference?"). There is no severe discrimination between the two types of languages but there is one major boundary separating the two. Spoken languages are understood through ears, whike sign languages are understood through eyes. Although minor solutions are present this difference restricts the death and the hearing from communica ting without any complexity. From a physical perspective sign language uses more energy and provides more exhaustion and spoken languages. Nevertheless both spoken languages and sign languages strive to complete the same task which is make conversation possible for all people. Sign language has truly impacted many different cultures and lives struggled with the exchange of dialogue. However sign language was not only created through the goal of using communication hardships. Some members of diverse cultures take Valzah silence and secrecy which drives them to learn a language that does not require any spoken words. According to Gale discovering collection, "members of religious orders sworn to silence often rely on simple gestures rather than coded system to communicate with one another" (Sign Language"). Because of sign language his current benefit to such an abundant population in the world more people are beginning to take a sincere fascination and language. Several experts believe that sign language can also be used to communicate with animals. For example since chimpanzees cannot speak the same language as humans expert suppose it would be possible to teach them to hold a conversation through hand motions and body language. MAS Ultra-School Ed ition Explains that "As a scientific experiment conducted by Columbia University Prof. Herbert Terrace, baby Nim was initially Please buy a surrogate 'mother,' Stephanie Lafarge, who lived with her husband and three children in a Manhattan apartment" (Of Chimps and Humans"). Nim, a baby chimpanzee was talk to communicate through sign language as a part of project Nim. He was not capable of creating sentences but that is only because his motivation to do so was not significantly great. If Nim wished he could have produced complex sentences because he was a very intelligent animal considering he understood all the sign language he was exposed to. An estimated 12 out of every 1000 people with hearing impairments become death under the age of 18. Because of this it is encouraged for children to learn sign language in there very early ages. The aim is to expand my knowledge on critical thinking also to develop and critically analyze various research skills supporting my studies throughà out the course of my degree. The journal will show a record of my personal reflections on each topic. In this journal I will be identifying concepts I find challenging, discovering new, exciting topics and will practical them using other modules. This is a compulsory module set by the university, which I believe is essential in my degree and career onwards in life because journals favors learning through the encouragement of conditions for learning, critical thinking is a skill that anyone would benefit from developing and using. I can certainly learn how to think critically and improve my problem solving skills with little extra effort. Keeping an academic journal will be quite interesting for a change as I do keep a personal diary; I am looking forward to acquiring new knowledge as aà developing critical thinker by the end of this module. WEEK ONE The tutor explained who a critical thinker and the core questions that a criticalà thinker needs to ask. There are a vast range of areas a critical thinker has to cover in order to become a problem solver. It could either be more focused reading, knowledge on how to get your points across easily (Cottrell, 2005) According to Cottrell (2005, p.1)ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢critical thinking is a cognitive activity, associated with using the mindââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢. Critical thinkers should have characteristics such as good observers, good communication skills, and good judgment just to mention a few. I found the first class to be very interestingà becauseà I realizedà that I am a natural critical thinker in anything I do, Ià exhibit most of the characteristics most times for example when asked about a topic I know nothing about, I try to answer using the surrounding facts to the topic. We also looked at different sources of information. I picked particular interest in articles. I currently sourced for an article by Arons, Arnold B. Critical Thinking and the Baccalaureate Curriculum.à That I will be using to understand this module better. At the end of this week I learnedà how to use critical thinking in relation to my academics. For instance if I was given an essay to write on, I wouldà know how to critically structureà my answers in relation to the question asked for example critically discuss the fallacies of descriptive writing. Citing as an example. WEEK TWO We continued this week on the sources of information. During the lecture the tutor differentiated the various sources of information, which include Newspapers, books, Journals, and Monographs. Newspapers and Books are one of the oldest forms ofà information. Newspapers are the most common source of information, which are broken down into three kinds, which are Tabloids, Middle market Tabloids and Broad sheets. Before now I was not familiar with the different types of newspaper I found the topic a bit confusing at first, but I had noticed the difference between the Independent (broadsheet) and The Mirror (Tabloids). The Tabloids includes papers like- The sun, The mirror- they are easy to read, simple grammar, they are also cheap. Or free in some cases. The middle tabloids are a little more detailed but still convey the news in a simple way; an example is Daily Mail. Broad sheets have a wider perspective and are more statistical; the use of English is more advanced. The observer, the guardian are some examples. As an international student I put the knowledge to practice by categorizing my countryââ¬â¢s newspaper into their various groups. I also looked at how various countries portray their news to the public, as this is one of the most accessible forms of media; For exampleà BBC news focuses on news in the uk (this being a British channel) and breaking news in other countries where as World News covers news around the world. In this week I learnt the importance of information via the newspaper. I liked the fact the tutor involved the class during the discussion. It was interactive. I found this topic very interesting and relevant to my course of study because Information is very important and using the right sources is very essential. It makes you aware of what is happening around you and also expands my views on different areas. WEEK THREE. In week three the topic discussed was ââ¬ËThe sources of materialsââ¬â¢. Every good source of information must have authentic evidence, validity, facts and opinions. According to Cottrell primary sources are the raw material for the subject, such as data and documents while secondary sources are materials such as books and articled based on, or written about. (Cottrell, 2005à p126,) Primary sources include those materials that have investigated and have evidence of time, place. Some examples are: photographs, newspapers, books, autobiographies just to mention a few. Secondary sources are written materials that usually have fact. These include: biographies, interviews with people that were present at the occurrence of the event. I identified the types of sourcesà but my area of concern where I found confusing was the grey area. -Grey areas are those types of sources that include primary and secondary sources. I think identifying the difference might be a bit confusing for me because for example in the case of a robbery, a news reporter may interview eyewitnesses but not the actual victim, the story could be changed when exchanged by word of mouth from one to another therefore altering the original story. Primary sources may be difficult sometimes if you do not have the facts to back it up. For example a TV interview which may be not available if it was not saved or recorded. Its authenticity could become unclear due to lack of evidence. Primary and secondary sources are necessary to achieve wider knowledge. The sources of information lay the foundation for writing .I will continuously build on my knowledge on collection of useful forms of materials. I have begun improving my writing skills to back-up my arguments. I will use a primary source to in my forth-coming essay in this module. WEEK FOUR Donald Campbell said All research ultimately has â⬠¨a qualitative groundingââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢. For qualitative research theres no such thing as qualitative data. â⬠¨Everything is either 1 or 0â⬠¨ according to Fred Kerlinger. Qualitative involves uses data like words (interviews, questionnaires) and quantitative research involves actual numbers. The tutor highlighted the various features and characteristics of both methods. The different methods are used in different a case for example Census counting, which is quantitative, and promoting a new product, which is qualitative. Quantitative as the word implies involves a lot of numbers tables, graphs are some of the methods used. This method is quite easy for me to use. Some features of quantitative research include; prediction, explanation, measurement and it claims objectivity. In qualitative; data is in form of words, objects and pictures, it is time consuming to create design as the study unfolds. For qualitative research, this source is more informal, opinions and emotions are expressed.it is not as strict and straightforward as the quantitative method. At the end of this topic I have a clearer understanding to the strengths and weakness of each method. According to Miles Huberman (1994, p.40). The strengths and weaknesses of qualitative and quantitative research are a perennial, hot debate, especially in the social sciences.à This phrase simply states the long existence of the research methods, not withstanding the differences between both of them; they are still widely used as research approaches. I have gained a deeper insight of the two types of methodologies. If I am told to do a research with either method I believe I will utilize both methods if asked. For me I think the qualitative approach is what I will prefer because it allows for beliefs and emotions to be expressed. I like to express opinions and myself where possible. I used the qualitative method in my information age module using a questionnaire on the importance of the Internet. à I did a little reading on a book called Introduction to social research by Punch, Keith F.I noticed that the qualitative approach is mostly used in the social sciences and quantitative approach is more science based, but either way if am told to do a research with any method I will be able to do it and achieve the purpose of the research. WEEK SIX. Week six was about Electronic Resources the session was presented by Maria Introwicz in the J.B library. She outlined the different types of information, such as books, journal articles and websites, and also how we can use library tools to find this information. She also outlined the various sources of finding information; website, e-books, Google scholar, journal books. The preferred referencing style in most United Kingdom universities is the Harvard system, which I have a little problem with. I asked her detailed questions to the areas I was facing problems with for example citing Newspapers. The session was helpful because I learnt how to use the Harvard system better .I had issues with referencing in my previous course now I am correcting my errors and still learning different ways to improve my referencing in my academics and here after. I personally do not utilize journals, E-books because I was not aware of how to use them. But now I do I will use more it, it shows different sources of information other than the regular books and websites. I think when this is used it shows more in-depth to the level of research that has been put into oneââ¬â¢s research. http:// www.library.ubc.ca/home/research.html is a website that has books and journals which I use to source for information. WEEK SEVEN In this week the area of focus was on journals. The oxford dictionary (2000) defined journals to be a newspaper or magazine that deals with a particular subject or professional activity. She outlined the various methods of sourcing for academic journals online, and from this university as well. We practiced searching for journals in our specific areas of study. I found it quiet difficult and confusing because finding the exact journal could be time-consuming. I will have to learn how to use this more no matter the backdrops.it shows a more comprehensive and extensive research if used in the case of academic work. This session has helped me improve my confidence in finding and making references. I found a journal using my Athens log-in called. WEEK EIGHT Argument and Analysis and Analytical Essay were the topic of the week the topic entailed the types of reasoning for writing essays, the structures and fallacies of reasoning. In writing essays, My arguments always needs to be properly explained to show my reflections and reasons to validate my work, particularly in academic writing. What I summarized off this weekââ¬â¢s lecture is the conclusion is the total summary of a whole essay. Conclusions are meant to draw clear pictures and always keep the readers mind and should never loose sight of the topic (Cottrell, 2005). It should always be logical and fact based. Including more evidence is a very wrong thing to do. I have learnt to correct my mistakes in this area. Relating to my other modules I have not put this to practice yet. WEEK TEN The use of language and how it conveys itââ¬â¢s meaning has an impact on the choice of words. Over the years just as the world as evolved the use of English has also done the same. In various disciplines there are specific terminologies used. For example in academics students in some cases used to be referred to as learners or customers but that has changed. Language is meant to convey meaning but express not only communication but also affects the way we deal with issues. WEEK ELEVEN The topic of the week was about written, verbal and visual communication. Communication is an unending process with people, customers, companies, news and others. The way the information is conveyed is as important as the information itself. We as human have different levels of understanding so the way we interpret Visual communication will vary as well. In written communication a considerable part of the skill comes from both the readerââ¬â¢s and writer ââ¬Ës ability to imagine the other point of view, verbal communication requires patience and imagination as well (martin 1987 p12). WEEK TWELVE At the end of this module I can say that I have identified myself as a critical thinker because I have improved my attention and observation skills, improved my skills of analysis and applying them to different situations. I have learnt to ask the core questions of a critical thinker, source for right materials, analysis my conclusions in conclusion I have learnt how to apply my critical knowledge to my other modules. Keeping this journal though was time consumingà but it created a deeper level of reflection for me not just for my academics but in my reasoning as well. REFERENCES Cottrell, S. When I first saw the conditions these animals are exposed to I could not believe that they can sustain their lives for four months. As a human, I am aware that warmth and food are critical conditions for survival. However, the documentary has opened my eyes to appreciate the fact that humans are made different from wild animals. Humans have access to shelter and can change their lifestyles according to changing seasons. For instance, all the animals migrate when winter starts but the emperor penguin and the polar bears live behind (BBC 1). The most important observation is that seasons influence animal behaviour tremendously because animals strive for survival. For instance, the emperor penguins are constantly standing during the winter season. It was astonishing and I forced myself to do some research on the penguinââ¬â¢s behaviour. I discovered that standing on their feet reduces their area of contact with ice to minimal levels and enables them preserve the little body heat that they have. In fact, it was surprising to note that they incubate eggs during the winter season. The other interesting point relates to the existence of the Amur leopard that leaves in the forests of eastern Russia. They are forty in number and are considered to be the rarest cat in the world. According to the narrator, the rare existence of the Amur leopard "symbolises the fragility of our natural heritage" (BBC 1). It is interestingà to haveà the narrator connect the existence of animals to the impact of nature on wildlife. The most valued things in life are rare to be found and difficult to get. Our national heritage consists of our values and our environment. However, the world has been experiencing environmental degradation with the increase in human as well as animal population. However, humans are the biggest cause of the fragility of natural Haisley Fortehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18253417646784910295noreply@blogger.com0
